I softly pad into your dimly lit room and see the outline of your tiny body on your bed. There’s something about the night that intensifies my feelings for you. My awe that you belong to me. My vulnerability that I can’t protect you from the harshness of this world.
I softly sit on your bed and feel your body roll towards me. For a minute we say nothing. Rarely do we share such silence. As your wide brown eyes search my face I can tell there is something you must tell me. Something you feel uncertain about.
“Mum…”
“Yes my dear boy. What is it,” I whisper.
Your eyes connect with mine and I wish I could dive into them and see your soul. A little soul I love so deeply it frightens me.
I would do anything for you son.
Anything.
“Mum…”
You reach up with your feeble little hand and gently smooth my hair. The maturity of your touch nearly takes my breath away.
“Mum…”
“Yes my gorgeous one. What is it you want to tell me?” I gently coax, feeling concern rise in my chest.
I run a comforting hand down your arm. “You can tell me anything love. Anything. Your secrets are always safe with me.”
“Well, it’s just that…”
“Yes my son.”
“It’s just that…”
“Go on. You can tell me.”
“It’s just that…well, um…you really need to fix your hair. It’s very, very messy.”
And the reality of motherhood laughs in my face.

January 22, 2014 at 11:57 pmAnd it doesn’t stop when they get older.
My 19 year old girl called out “Muuuuum I need you”
My heart skipped a beat when I heard these words,as sadly I am not needed so much any more.
I sat down on the lounge and said “Yes my girl what do you need, you know Im always here for you”
Her reply “I need you to get this white top white again as I washed it with red and now it is pink”
I was shot back down to reality quick smart 🙂
